That is a very helpful Bernard!

I am a professional in testing mobile banking applications and would like to add one more item in the checklist you mentioned.

USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) is becoming a very important part of GSM handsets. USSD dial codes look like *123# and are used to fetch information from your Carrier like 'Last call cost' or 'Balance in your pre-paid cards'.

USSD has been gaining a lot of popularity offlate because it is handset independent and the messages are not saved in the phone memory. One of the leading banks in the world has actually implemented their Mobile banking application completely using USSD. I was fortunate enough to be the test manager for that programme and it was quite an experience.

Though USSD is supported by all handsets, during our testing with different handsets we discovered that one of the handsets 'Motorola A1200' (also known as MotoMing) had issues in supporting USSD. I would not go into the details of the issue but the crux is that Bank customers with Motorola A1200 handsets could not use their handset for mobile banking.

Bank had mentioned in their Mobile banking promotions and banners that their mobile banking application was universal and could be accessed from any GSM handset but it was not to be !!

Conclusion: Please test USSD during the mobile testing and ensure user is able to input USSD code and receives the responses.

Cheers!

Great post Bernard. Your "lessons learned" and tips will inspire [and educate] many within the community, especially as we are seeing a dramatic increase in the number of mobile projects coming in.
